When it comes to glass, a few things are universally true:
- It’s gonna get dirty!
- The more you use it, the faster it will get dirty!
- Nobody likes smoking out of dirty glass!
But there is more to this discussion than just that! Knowing how to clean a glass pipe or bong properly — and how often you should do it — is an important part of glass pipe maintenance. How often you should clean your piece is a balance between personal preference, frequency of use, and the type of glass pipe you are using.
Why Cleaning Your Glass Pipe Matters

Hand pipes actually smoke better once they’ve formed what is known as a “cake,” a thin layer of resin that develops inside the bowl after a few smoking sessions. A good cake will help keep your packed plant material in place before you smoke, without negatively affecting flavor. Over time though, the cake will become thicker, eventually reducing airflow. This process can take a long time (weeks, or even months), or just a session or two, depending on the hand pipe’s design.
Once your pipe becomes restricted, it’s time to clean your glass pipe and remove resin buildup. Hand pipes with a well developed cake might need a good soak using a proper glass pipe cleaner or bong cleaning solution to break up the buildup. To help speed up the process, we recommend keeping a pipe cleaner brush designed for cleaning glass pipes on hand, as well as shaking or agitating the piece while it soaks. Many smokers also use the classic salt and alcohol method to clean a glass pipe, since salt grains act as a glass-safe abrasive that helps break up and remove caked-on resin and plant matter.
How to Clean a Bong or Water Pipe
Water pipes like bongs and bubblers are a slightly different story. Just like hand pipes, the bowl on your bubbler or the slide in your bong actually benefits from building up a cake. However, there are plenty of voices out there that insist you must clean your bong after every session, and there is indeed some wisdom to this philosophy.

Perfectly clean bongs produce better tasting smoke, and removing the resin and plant material before it bonds to your glass makes cleaning a bong much easier and more effective later. The only real downside to cleaning a water pipe after every session is the time and cost, but this can be offset by using reusable bong cleaning tools or specialized bong cleaning solutions.
Quick Tips to Keep Your Bong Clean Between Sessions

Some people swear that a quick rinse and refill is the easiest way to keep a bong clean between sessions. A quick rinse is fast, easy, and doesn’t require any special tools or cleaners to get the job done. Fresh water will smell better, and clean bong water helps your hits taste smoother and fresher. Plus, much of the resin and plant material will be rinsed away before it can stick to the glass. Your piece will look nicer and hit cleaner — a true win-win for anyone trying to keep their bong clean between uses.
Health Reasons to Clean Your Glass Pipe or Bong Regularly
We don’t just clean glass for flavor and aesthetics though. There are also health reasons for regularly cleaning your bong or glass pipe. Though it isn’t extremely common, under the right conditions dirty bong water can begin to grow bacteria. Inhaling smoke that has passed through contaminated water can potentially cause breathing irritation or other health issues. For this reason, it’s a good idea to change your bong water daily and deep clean your bong thoroughly at least once a week. Your lungs will thank you, and we’re sure you’ll notice the difference in flavor of your smoke as well!
Cleaning Glass Pipes That Haven’t Been Used in a While
Keeping your “daily driver” glass pipes clean is definitely important, but what about pipes that don’t see regular use? When it comes to hand pipes, their cake will eventually dry out. Old, dry resin buildup can create a harsh taste when smoking, as the cake itself may begin to burn. If you’re picking up a piece you haven’t smoked in a few weeks, it’s a good idea to fully clean the glass pipe before smoking again.

For water pipes, it is even more important to make sure they aren’t left to dry out. Bongs and bubblers will lose water to evaporation over time, and the resin and plant matter will deposit onto the glass and harden. This type of resin buildup is one of the hardest forms of bong residue to remove when cleaning a bong. Your bong or bubbler may require multiple rounds of soaking with a dedicated bong cleaner to fully remove the buildup.
Minerals in your water may also deposit on the glass, creating hard water stains that may not wash away without stronger cleaning solutions.
What Is Glass Bloom and How to Prevent It
There is one other concern as well, and that is bloom. Bloom is the term for glass that has begun to look hazy and often resembles hard water stains, but bloom cannot be removed with cleaners. Bloom is actually damage that has occurred to the glass over time and is caused by prolonged contact with water. Bloom occurs when moisture causes alkaline deposits in the glass, like sodium and potassium, to leach out, leaving behind carbonate crystals. These crystals are what give the glass that cloudy discoloration.
To help prevent bloom and protect your glass bong or bubbler, it is best to store your pieces dry whenever possible, especially if they will sit unused for long periods of time. It is also possible to reduce the risk of bloom by always using distilled, or reverse osmosis purified water in your bong or bubbler.

How Often Should You Clean a Glass Pipe or Bong?
Individual tastes will always vary, but hopefully this guide will give you a better idea of how often you should clean a glass pipe, or clean your bong. Whenever possible, we recommend cleaning more often. There is nothing quite like the first hit from a freshly cleaned glass pipe or crystal-clear bong, and it can make your piece feel brand new again. If you’ve got a color changer, you’ll even get to watch it change color all over again!
