One of a kind super heady dry glass pipe Sherlock. My friend Peter came over to my new studio the other day, we had a blast making a few things and playing around. Pete lives about 2 hours away in Olympia, WA. I had a lot of fun throwing down with Peter and his friend that evening!
This pipe is one of his signature shapes with my signature Purple Nebula colors and faceted crystals.
We made this piece just to have fun and make something as cool as we could. I think it really shows in the end product. Peter used some of his stash of an extinct color called “OG Moss.” This color is a buttery satin sparkle green, is one of the most desirable colors, and has been unavailable for over a DECADE. He added together yellow lip wraps, encalmos of his worked tubing, and my Purple Nebula Sections.
Peter then shaped the parts and fitted this incredible sherlock together.
I was busy working on the faceted opal crystal sections while Peter did the assembly. I needed to make the opal marbles and let them anneal overnight and cool in the kiln before I could take them to the faceting machine in my cold working room.
This Sherlock glass pipe took us a few days to make. Peter left that night at midnight for his 2 hr drive home! That’s dedication!
The next day I added all the facets and made the opal marbles into the 2 crystals you see now.
I then had to put the all individual pieces back in the kiln to warm back up to 1100° to add them to the pipe. Once they were added, I then ran an annealing cycle on the kiln to bring the Sherlock back to room temp.
The next day, after inspecting the Sherlock Pipe for any minor changes or cracks, I decided it was ready to be finished.
The next step was to cut the mouthpiece at an angle on my Pistorius wet saw. Then I took the mouth piece to my 12″ flat lapidary wheel to polish the mouthpiece until it was smooth and shiny.
After many days of careful work, the piece was finally done! YEY!!!!
Remember, I take these pictures with great care and use lots of lighting to help you see the full beauty of my glass. Don’t forget to click on the photos to make them HUGE!
Thanks,
Tako
